Great Grandma Angelina
December 20, 1879 - April 20, 1961
Born and raised
Italy, Angelina Marie married Dominic in 1897 and had eight
children. Two of their children were born in Italy and six children
were born in the US after they had immigrated to the United States
in 1905 on the SS Roma ship when she was 26.
She was the youngest
of three children. Her father passed on before she was born and her
mother passed on when she was 12.
Stories:
In the middle of a
horrific storm that was destroying everything in it's path, Great
Grandma Angelina went to the property line, knelt down and began
praying. The storm went around the property and spared their farm.
Her tremendous faith was almost saintly.
During Andrea's
herbal training, she was tasked with finding a plant that was
growing in her yard and to go sit with it and see what she got from
it. She picked mallow (Malva neglecta). One night at dinner,
she asked her mom about Great Grandma Angelina and if she had any
herbs or plants that she used to help the family when they were
sick. Turns out, it was the same plant Andrea had chosen to sit with
- mallow (Malva neglecta). What's even more amazing, the
mallow that is growing all over the yard, was originally brought by
Andrea's grandfather (Mike), Angelina's son, when he built the
house. He brought the plant from his farm, which were the plants
that she used to make teas!
Great Grandma Angelina
had a special blend of chamomile tea used for rest and sleep.
She used peppermint for stomach ailments. Her youngest son,
Mike, had ulcers so bad that he couldn't eat her cooking which
frequently had spaghetti sauce incorporated in it. She began
putting a little baking soda in her sauce de-acidifying her sauce
enabling her son to eat without causing any discomfort. Her
son-in-law once had terrible "spots" on his arms. She laid
leaches on the spots to eradicate them.
She had a great
sense of humor and a love for her family and friends. She was
well respected in the farming community in which she lived.
